Why Veganuary Is a Great Idea (and Definitely Not Boring)

Veganuary is a chance to try something new, feel good, and explore food in a more exciting way. Eating vegan doesn’t mean missing out – it means discovering bold spices, fresh ingredients, and dishes full of flavours.

This one

Sri Lankan cooking has always celebrated plant-based food. Coconut, vegetables, lentils, herbs, and spices are at the heart of so many traditional dishes, which means vegan food can be just as comforting, indulgent, and satisfying as anything else.

Choosing vegan options can also be lighter, more nourishing, and kinder to the planet, but most importantly it should still be as exciting. From rich curries and kotthu to colourful sambols, vegan food is anything but boring.

Whether you’re doing Veganuary properly or just swapping in a few plant-based dishes, our Roots menu proves that vegan food is full of warmth, flavour, and joy – and best of all, it’s made for sharing.

At The Coconut Tree we’re excited to introduce our new Roots menu – a vibrant celebration of Sri Lankan plant-based cooking.

We’ve kept the Roots favourites you love and added new dishes, including plant-based twists on popular main-menu classics. Every dish is warming, flavour-packed, and made to nourish.

What’s New on the Roots Menu

  • Tofu Colombo – A vegan take on our much-loved Cheesy Colombo, packed with protein and bold spices.
  • Lady’s Fingers and 5Cs – Fresh, fragrant, and full of flavour.
  • Ala Kiri Hodi – A traditional Sri Lankan potato curry cooked in creamy coconut milk.
