From London to Colombo: Celebrating Christmas Around the World
At The Coconut Tree, we believe that food is the heart of every celebration. Whether it’s a Sri Lankan curry shared with friends or a roast dinner around the family table, every dish tells a story. And at Christmas — the most special time of the year — those stories come alive across the world.
Our restaurants were built on bringing people together, blending vibrant Sri Lankan flavours with good vibes and community spirit. So, this festive season, we’re taking a little trip around the world to see how different cultures including Sri Lanka, the UK, the Philippines, and Germany — celebrate Christmas in their own unique ways.

Christmas in Sri Lanka: A Tropical Celebration
Christmas in Sri Lanka is full of warmth — and not just from the sunshine. Although Christians make up a smaller percentage of the population, the festive spirit is embraced island wide. Cities like Colombo and Negombo glow with fairy lights, nativity scenes, and towering Christmas trees made from coconut leaves.
Churches hold midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, and families gather for feasts featuring both Western and Sri Lankan dishes — think roast chicken, Christmas cake soaked in brandy, and plates of spicy short eats. It’s common to share gifts and food with neighbours of all faiths, reflecting the island’s generous spirit.
At The Coconut Tree, we like to think of it as a celebration for all your family and friends to enjoy a festive feast— the true flavour of Christmas, island-style.
Christmas in the UK: Tradition with a Touch of Tinsel
In the UK, streets light up in early December, with twinkling markets, festive music, and the unmistakable aroma of mulled wine. Families decorate Christmas trees, hang stockings by the fireplace, and gather for the iconic Christmas dinner — roast turkey, crispy potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and gravy galore.
Boxing Day, on December 26th, keeps the celebrations going with leftovers, countryside walks, and sales shopping. British Christmas also means carols, pantomimes, and the King’s Christmas message — a moment of reflection after all the festivities.
The joy is in the togetherness — a warm reminder that even in the coldest winter, there’s always room for good food and laughter.
Christmas in the Philippines: The World’s Longest Celebration
In the Philippines, Christmas is a season that lasts nearly four months! The “Ber months” (September through December) are filled with carols, lights, and community spirit. Streets are lined with parols (bright star-shaped lanterns), symbolising the Star of Bethlehem.
Families attend Simbang Gabi, a series of nine dawn masses leading up to Christmas Eve, followed by Noche Buena, a midnight feast bursting with Filipino favourites like lechon (roast pig), pancit, and sweet rice cakes.
It’s a time of joy, music, and giving — and even though it’s tropical, it’s said to be the “Merriest Christmas in the world.”
Christmas in Germany: Where Many Traditions Began
Many of the world’s favourite Christmas customs trace back to Germany — from decorated Christmas trees to Advent calendars and Christmas markets. The German Weihnachtsmarkt is a magical affair, filled with stalls selling handmade crafts, roasted nuts, and Glühwein (spiced mulled wine).
Families gather to light Advent candles each Sunday before Christmas and bake treats like Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Stollen (fruit bread). Christmas Eve is often quiet and reflective, ending with church services and family dinners.
Germany’s deep-rooted traditions remind us that Christmas can be both joyful and peaceful — a perfect balance of celebration and comfort.
Different Flavours… One Spirit
Whether it’s Sri Lankan coconut cake, British mince pies, Filipino lechon, or German gingerbread, Christmas around the world is about connection — about gathering with those you love, sharing food, and creating memories.
At The Coconut Tree, we celebrate that same spirit every day. Our table is open to everyone — a place where cultures meet, flavours mingle, and the Christmas feeling lasts all year round.
